South Bank Ramblers

Wed 30 JUL 2025 BENFLEET TO SOUTHEND - Ann C

The walk follows the England Coastal Path into Southend and finishes with an opportunity to visit the Prittlewell Burial exhibition at the Southend Museum adjacent to Southend Victoria Station. The Coastal Path gives superb views of Thames marshes and the estuary in the morning and takes us along classic seaside promenades in the afternoon. The terrain is flat except for a short climb at the end. Easy walking, but we’ll need to keep up a moderate pace. Paths are good, though the morning section could be muddy. The Southend Museum exhibition displays luxury objects excavated from the nearby Prittlewell Princely Burial mound. This Anglo Saxon site, dated around 600 AD, featured in the recent Silk Roads Exhibition at the British Museum and is considered to be similar in richness to Sutton Hoo. Admission to Southend Museum is free.
