A brisk walk past a nature reserve and lake with Japanese pavilion, through Slaugham (pronounced 'Slaffam') with its churchyard with a 600-year-old yew tree and the ruins of Slaugham Manor. Then a walk down to the River Ouse and up through fields and woods to the fine old village of Balcombe. Lunch: Pub or picnic on the green at Staplefield.
